Format Guide

Standard

Bring a deck built from cards in the current set rotation. The main competitive TCG format. Check the event listing for any format restrictions (Standard, Expanded, etc.).

Commander / EDH

100-card singleton decks built around a legendary creature (your Commander). Played in 4-player pods. Highly social — any power level welcome. Call your deck's power level before sitting down.

Draft

Everyone opens the same booster packs and passes cards around the table, picking one at a time. Build a deck from what you drafted. No existing collection needed — one of the most level playing fields in TCGs.

Sealed

Open product at the table and build a deck from what you pull. Entry fee covers the product. No existing collection needed — everyone starts from scratch.

Pre-Release

Sealed event using a brand-new set before it officially releases. One of the best nights to meet a game's community — everyone is learning the new cards at the same time.

Release Event

Celebrates a set's official launch day. Usually sealed format — open the new product at the table and compete. Great entry point for players curious about a new set.

League Play

Recurring structured play where results are tracked over a season. Earn points, climb rankings, and qualify for higher-tier events. Sanctioned leagues count toward official rankings.

Competitive / Store Tournament

Structured competitive event with Swiss rounds and prizes for top finishers. Bring your best constructed deck. Decklists may be required — confirm with staff before the event.

Casual / Open Play

Drop-in play at your own pace. No tournament structure, no ranking stakes. Great for learning a game, testing new decks, or just hanging out and playing.

Campaign Play

Long-form narrative play across multiple sessions — the format used for D&D and similar tabletop RPGs. Groups build stories together over weeks or months. Usually a closed group once started.

Before You Arrive

Good to Know

Paid vs Free

Events that include product (sealed, draft, pre-release) have an entry fee that covers it. Constructed tournaments vary — some are free, some have a small entry fee. Weekly game nights and open table play are always free. Each event listing shows the fee up front.

What to Bring

Constructed: your deck, card sleeves, a playmat if you have one, dice or counters. Arrive a few minutes early — decklists may be required.

Sealed or Draft: just yourself. Your entry covers everything.

Skill Level

Open game nights and sealed events welcome complete beginners — no prior collection or experience needed. Constructed tournaments assume you know your game and your deck. When in doubt, check the event description or ask staff.

Practical

Most weekly events are walk-in. Some special events — especially sealed with limited seats — require pre-registration. Check the event listing or contact us on Facebook to confirm. Typical event duration is 2–4 hours depending on attendance and format.

Prizes

Most events offer promo cards and prize packs for top finishers. Details are listed per event. Ask at the counter for the current breakdown.

All Ages

Events at GeekyGami's are all-ages and kids are always welcome. Some events — like Salty Commander Night — are more competitive in tone and better suited to older kids, but there's no age restriction. Ask staff which night fits your group.
